DESCRIPTION
The Detroit Lions are reaching the most important stretch of training camp, and several players are beginning to make their moves before Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes have to finalize the 53-man roster.
Mike Payton breaks down his biggest observations from Day 15 of Detroit Lions training camp, including a disruptive performance from the Lions defense, another encouraging day for Ennis Rakestraw Jr., some major developments along the offensive line and an increasingly interesting quarterback situation behind Jared Goff.
Detroit's defense made life difficult on the offense throughout several situational periods. Aidan Hutchinson finished the final competitive sequence by getting to Jared Goff on a two-point conversion attempt, while rookie edge rusher Derrick Moore continued to flash as a pass rusher. Anthony Lucas, Derrick Barnes and others also made plays during a practice where Detroit's defense consistently created problems.
But one of the biggest individual stories continues to be Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
Mike didn't have Rakestraw on his projected Lions 53-man roster following Detroit's preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Since then, however, Rakestraw has started stacking the consistent practices Dan Campbell has been looking for. He broke up a pass intended for Jameson Williams, generated a sack on a cornerback blitz and continued showing sticky coverage during another encouraging practice.
Has Rakestraw worked his way back onto the roster?
The Detroit Lions offensive line also appears to be taking shape.
Ben Bartch once again wasn't practicing, and Mike believes Christian Mahogany has done enough to take control of the left guard competition. Meanwhile, Juice Scruggs received the overwhelming majority of the first-team work at center with Cade Mays unavailable, with Seth McLaughlin also receiving a limited opportunity.
Then there's the backup quarterback situation.
Rookie Luke Altmyer continues to receive considerably more practice work than veteran Joshua Dobbs. Mike explains why the unusual split raises questions about Detroit's quarterback room and whether the Lions could eventually look outside the organization for another option.
Plus, the punt-return competition between Greg Dortch and Tom Kennedy could have major implications for the final receiver spots, with Tay Martin and Dominic Lovett also trying to make their cases.
With only a handful of practices and two preseason games remaining, the Lions are rapidly approaching decision time.
Mike Payton breaks down everything that stood out from Detroit Lions training camp and which players helped themselves the most.
