DESCRIPTION
The Detroit Lions are almost out of training camp practices, and Saturday's preseason matchup against the Washington Commanders could be the most important day of the summer for several players fighting for jobs, roles and spots on Detroit's final 53-man roster.
Mike Payton breaks down 10 Lions players who have a tremendous amount riding on the team's second preseason game, including Ennis Rakestraw Jr., Luke Altmyer, Seth McLaughlin, Dominic Lovett, Tay Martin, Sione Vaki and more.
For Sione Vaki, an injury opened the door for Jacob Saylors to make a strong impression during training camp and the preseason. Vaki's special teams ability has always given him a legitimate path to Detroit's roster, but Mike explains why the remaining practices and Saturday's game could be crucial to reestablishing his place in the running back room.
The wide receiver battle may be even tighter.
Dominic Lovett entered camp looking like a strong candidate for Detroit's fifth receiver spot, but his uneven preseason performance and the special teams value of Tay Martin have complicated the race. Mike believes Lovett and Martin may essentially be competing for one roster spot, making every special teams rep and offensive opportunity against Washington important.
Jackson Meeks faces a different challenge after transitioning from wide receiver to tight end. Mike still believes in Meeks' long-term upside, but the Lions may ultimately decide he's a developmental player better suited for the practice squad unless he forces their hand.
Then there's the offensive line.
With Cade Mays unavailable, Seth McLaughlin has an opportunity to compete with Juice Scruggs at center. McLaughlin impressed against Cincinnati, but Detroit's recent practice usage suggests Scruggs has the advantage. Can McLaughlin change that conversation against Washington?
Mike also examines Eric O'Neill's push for a defensive roster spot, Levi Onwuzurike's battle with injuries and a crowded defensive line, Joe Bachie's special teams path at linebacker and the increasingly important backup quarterback competition between rookie Luke Altmyer and veteran Josh Dobbs.
Finally, there's Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
The former second-round pick has flashed throughout camp but has struggled to consistently stay on the field and string performances together. With Detroit's cornerback room extremely competitive, Rakestraw may need one of his best performances of the summer to convince the Lions they need to make room for another corner on the 53.
The Detroit Lions host the Washington Commanders Saturday, and for these 10 players, it could be much more than another preseason game.
