DESCRIPTION
The Detroit Lions face the Washington Commanders Saturday at Ford Field, and this preseason matchup could give Dan Campbell some important answers before Detroit has to finalize its roster and starting lineup. A to Z Sports Detroit's Mike Payton is joined by new A to Z Sports Commanders host Sean Anderson to break down what both teams need to see, which Lions players could benefit most from real game reps and why some of the biggest training camp narratives need to be viewed differently once the football actually becomes live. Jared Goff will not play for the Lions, which puts the spotlight on Josh Dobbs and rookie Luke Altmyer as Detroit continues evaluating its backup quarterback situation. Mike explains why Dobbs still has something to prove and why Saturday could provide a much clearer picture of how the Lions actually view their quarterback room behind Goff. Detroit's offensive line could be even more important. With the Lions still trying to determine their best five-man combination, Saturday provides an opportunity to evaluate communication, chemistry and individual performance in a setting training camp can't completely recreate. Rookie tackle Blake Miller is one player both Mike and Sean are especially interested in watching after an encouraging start to his first NFL preseason. The guys also discuss why fans should be careful about overreacting to offensive line versus defensive line one-on-one results during training camp. Those drills inherently favor pass rushers and don't recreate the protections, chips, quarterback movement or game situations offensive linemen would normally have available. On the Washington side, the Commanders have their own major offensive line questions following Laremy Tunsil's injury, making their matchup against Detroit's pass rush particularly valuable. Then Mike and Sean dive into one of the most interesting quarterback-development stories in the NFL: Jayden Daniels studying Jared Goff and Matthew Stafford. Former Lions quarterback and current Washington offensive coordinator David Blough is working with Daniels as the Commanders reshape their offense. Sean explains why Goff's command of the pocket, processing and ability to control a game could provide an ideal blueprint for an athletic quarterback like Daniels as he continues developing the mental side of the position. Can Daniels become even more dangerous by running less? What can young quarterbacks learn from Goff's pocket movement? And which Lions players need to make the biggest impression Saturday? Mike Payton and Sean Anderson break it all down ahead of Detroit Lions vs. Washington Commanders.
