The Lions Defense Just Sent A SCARY Message To The NFL...

DESCRIPTION
The Detroit Lions beat the Washington Commanders 17-13 in their second preseason game, but the final score wasn't nearly as important as what Mike Payton saw from Detroit's defense.
The Lions defensive front looked fast, aggressive and disruptive throughout the game, continuing a trend Mike has been watching throughout training camp. D.J. Wonnum got to Jayden Daniels for a sack, rookie Derrick Moore continued to create pressure, and several Detroit defensive linemen flashed against Washington.
And that's before the Lions even have their entire defensive front together.
Aidan Hutchinson didn't need preseason work, while Alim McNeill also wasn't part of the full group Detroit expects to deploy when the regular season begins. If the urgency and quick pressure the Lions showed against Washington carries into Week 1, Mike believes this defensive line could look significantly different from the group Detroit fielded last season.
There were plenty of other important developments in the Lions' 17-13 preseason victory.
Ennis Rakestraw Jr. returned after dealing with another injury and put together a solid performance, but Mike still isn't convinced his spot on the final 53-man roster is secure. Detroit's cornerback room is crowded, and Rakestraw may have to convince the Lions that carrying an additional corner is worth sacrificing a roster spot somewhere else.
The backup quarterback battle also took another major turn.
Josh Dobbs had one of the strangest performances of the afternoon. His opening possessions included a sack and fumble that Washington recovered for a touchdown and a bad interception. Then Dobbs responded with a 50-yard rushing touchdown.
Luke Altmyer was the complete opposite.
The rookie quarterback completed 9 of 13 passes for 86 yards without a touchdown or interception and once again looked calm and controlled. Mike explains why Altmyer's consistency may have given him the advantage over Dobbs — while also wondering whether Detroit could still look outside the organization for another veteran quarterback before the season.
The Lions offensive line provided another mixed result.
Detroit's starting group showed encouraging signs, and Juice Scruggs continues to make Mike feel better about the center position while Cade Mays is unavailable. But the depth behind the starters remains concerning after Luke Altmyer absorbed significant pressure.
Mike breaks down the biggest winners, concerns and roster implications from the Detroit Lions' preseason win over the Washington Commanders at Ford Field.
