DESCRIPTION
The Detroit Lions' initial 53-man roster is set — but Mike Payton doesn't believe it's the final roster. With the waiver wire and free agency opening up, Detroit has an opportunity to add more talent to several positions, particularly at guard and quarterback. The Lions also hold the No. 17 waiver priority, giving them a much better chance to land players who become available. Mike breaks down several players the Lions should have their eyes on following roster cuts. Robert Jones is one of the most intriguing offensive-line options. Jones started all 17 games at left guard for the Miami Dolphins in 2024 and has 30 career starts. Mike explains why Jones could realistically walk into Allen Park and compete with Christian Mahogany for the starting guard job. Cordell Volson is another experienced guard to watch. Volson started 48 games for the Cincinnati Bengals over three seasons before missing the 2025 season after shoulder surgery. If he's healthy, Mike believes Detroit should at least bring him in and let him compete. Then there's quarterback. Mike explains why the Lions should consider taking a chance on former Titans quarterback Will Levis. Despite his struggles in Tennessee, Levis has the arm talent Detroit could potentially develop with a coaching staff that includes former quarterbacks and quarterback coaches. Mike's favorite waiver-wire target, however, may be defensive tackle McKinley Jackson. The former third-round pick is only 24 years old, has already appeared in 22 NFL games and reportedly drew trade interest before Cincinnati waived him. With Detroit holding the No. 17 waiver priority, Mike believes the Lions should seriously consider making a claim. Mike also discusses Jake Browning, Jabari Muhammad, Colby Wooden and other players Detroit could target in the coming days. The Lions' initial 53-man roster is NOT necessarily the final roster.
